Dr. Stefan Samardžić, assistant professor

He was born in 1984 in Sarajevo. He graduated from the University of Novi Sad Faculty of Law in 2008. He received his LL.M. degree from the University of Novi Sad Faculty of Law in 2010 (“The Effect of the Perpetrator’s Age on the Application of Criminal Law”). He defended his doctoral dissertation (“Rehabilitation of Persons Convicted for Political or Ideological Reasons and its Legal Consequences”) at the University of Novi Sad Faculty of Law in 2017.

Fellowships and grants: scholarship of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Serbia and EFG Bank to the best students of the final year of studies for outstanding results (2006); scholarship of the Fund for Providing Scholarships and Facilitating Progress of Talented Students and Young Researchers and Artists of the University of Novi Sad (2006/2007); award of the University of Novi Sad as the best student of the Faculty of Law in Novi Sad (2008/2009).

Employment:  The University of Novi Sad Faculty of Law (2008- ).

Areas of research and expertise: criminal law, war crimes, rehabilitation, restitution, agricultural land.

  • participation in the debate “The role of International Criminal Justice in Reconciliation” before the United Nations General Assembly in New York (2013)
  • coach of the teams of the Faculty of Law in Novi Sad in the Moot Court Competition before the International Criminal Court, who won the highest titles at the world level (2014-2017)
  • leading position in defense teams before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague (2014-2016)

Participation in working groups

  • in the capacity of a UNDP expert, the author of the Draft Rulebook on the manner and procedure of leasing arable agricultural land that has not been cultivated in the previous vegetation period (2020)
  • member of the Working group for drafting the Land Consolidation Act (2020)
  • member of a number of working groups of the Government of the Republic of Serbia in the field of general restitution, remedying consequences of seizure of assets from Holocaust victims with no legal living heirs (2012-2017)
  • member of the National Strategy for War Crimes Prosecution (2015-2016)
